Who is Orpheus Acoustics?

orpheus himself Christopher Brooks

Orpheus Acoustics is I, Christopher Brooks (with some help). I am an acoustical consultant, specializing in architectrual acoustics, which includes room acoustics and noise measurement and control, with a passion for live performance in intimate spaces with wonderful acoustics.

My experience as a professional violinist and as a lover of music brought me to acoustics. Working for Russell Johnson (the modern master of architectural acoustics) in his firm Artec Consultants, Inc. in New York, gave me the opportunity to listen in some wonderful new halls (such as the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas), and the opportunity to work on the design of some of the latest crop of truly great performance spaces (like the New Jersey Performing Arts Center).

Working on and listening in these spaces fed my passion for excellent acoustics. I was particularly struck by the astonishing clarity of these spaces made possible by extremely low background noise levels: background noise levels at the threshold of hearing.

After three years of working in New York City, and seeing my wife, Lynn, and son, Ethan, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, only on weekends, I decided to start my own acoustical consulting firm, Orpheus Acoustics, in order to pursue the dream of acoustical excellence closer to home.

My first project was a theatre for the Actors Company of Pennsylvania in the Lancaster Trust Building. Most people considered the acoustics of this building to be impossible for drama, but we did it on a very tight budget. The project was a great success.

"You are clearly an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, professional who will work with the client until the desired result is achieved, (even under constraints of budget cut-backs) and has a commitment to the finest possible acoustics, specifically refined for the type of music (or theatre) being presented.

Specifically beneficial was your willingness to explain acoustics by use of the lights and model, and patience in dealing with community committees.

The greatest benefit of having you as our acoustical consultant was knowing we were talking to both an acoustics expert and a musician."

Since then, I have been working on a wide variety of projects, ranging from noise level measurements to a synagogue in Austin, Texas (Agudas Achim, with Lake|Flato Architects).

I use the same design philosophy whether working on world-class performing arts centers or helping a local architect design a high school auditorium (though the budgets may be different). After all, the local high school auditorium is often the local performing arts center.

I have a dream. With a little forethought and a little care, we could have a landscape dotted with acoustically superb, modest-sized performance spaces and houses of worship.

    Does this excite you too?
