Interior Design and Historic Restoration.
I've worked with Gilbert on several school auditoriums.
including these two:
Hannah Penn
Middle School in York, and
McCaskey East
High School.
Greenfield Architects
I worked with Greenfield on what remains one of my very favorite projects, the
Longacre Center at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School
. This auditorium project worked out particularly well because we took the time to step back and investigate the basic acoustical requirement of this particular space, and to build the design from basic principles---rather than blindly copying another school auditorium.
The result is a simple, intimate space with both clarity for speech and support for singing.
H2L2 Architects/Planners
H2L2 is an old firm, founded in 1907 by Paul Phillipe Cret. Before I knew anything about them, I was sufficiently struck by their Ephrata Pennsylvania Public library to stop as I was driving by to walk inside and inquire who had designed the building. Their long history has generated many strking buildings, truly demonstrating that for H2L2 "form follows function" is merely the jumping off point.
Hayes Large Architects
The Hayes Large team of 110 highly trained and experienced professionals provides a full scope of services, including master planning, programming, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, structural engineering, construction administration, and a host of additional specialized services
I worked with Hayes Large on
a successful renovation of the auditorium for the Williamson H.S.
Auditorium---one of those very tight budget projects which worked
out really well. Yes, it can be done.
I also worked with Hayes Large on the
Jim Thorpe Senior High School and the
Williamsport Area High School. The users are ecstatic about both of these auditoria.

The Ives Group

Beth Abraham, Bergenfield, New Jersey
John Milner Architects Inc.
This firm (with whom I have done a pair of small projects) produces breathtakingly beautiful historic renovation projects.
Kieran Timberlake Associates
Years of thinking and writing about the process of architecture are the fertile soil from which Kieran Timberlake Associates produce beautiful work. The results are far from pricky and theoretical. Rather, their work is warm and inviting.
Levin/Brown & Associates, Inc.
Levin/Brown specializes in houses of worship (with a particular strength in synagogues), educational facilities, and residences. A moments reflection will reveal a strong connection among these three types of buildings.
Lake|Flato Architects
These guys are real artists: the AIA 2004 Firm of the Year. And they deserve it.
We worked together on a synagogue for Congregation
Agudas Achim in Austin Texas
Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis
Metropolis Magazine featured three restaurants by this firm in their
May 2005 issue. Five aspects of their work struck me:
- three-dimensionality (so important to acoustics),
- hands-on approach,
- imaginative use of materials ("no drywall" --- wonderful!),
- the ability to go wild within constraints,
- pizzazz.
McKissick and Associates Architects
This new firm was started by some people with whom I have worked. These guys are sharp; keep an eye on them!
MRM Architects
MRM Architects design playful, cheerful buildings--while keeping their cost-conscious institutional clients happy---for nearly a half a century.

Here are two projects on which I worked with them:
The Pennsylvania State University
The Behrend College
Chapel and Belltower
, Erie, PA
and
Shippensburg University Foundation Chapel,
Shippensburg, PA
Stuart Christenson design for
St. Paul United Methodist Church
Chambersburg, PA received a design award from the Central Pennsylvania branch of the AIA (Architectural Institute of America).
Purdy O'Gwynn Barnhart
I worked with this firm a while back on a bank conference room. I am reminded of their imaginative, elegant and understated work by occassional postcards. Here is a fine example: The Pennsylvania Military Museum
Webber/Smith Architects
These guys sent me off to Iowa to take sound level measurements in the office of one of their meat-packing plants.

Agudas Achim Synagogue
This is the sanctuary of a synagogue with whom I am working with the wonderful architects, Lake/Flato in San Antonio Texas. Come on guys, when are you going to get a web page so other people can see your work?
Auditorium Dijon
I worked on this project while at Artec Consultants. The visual design is just stunning.
Avery Fisher Hall
I worked a at Artec on solving the problems of acoustics for ensemble on the stage of Avery Fisher Hall. We interviewed musicians, took acoustical measurements in the hall, listened on stage, built and studied scale models and computer models of the hall. After the renovation, a violist in the orchestra told me "the first violins" (previously inaudible) "leapt out at me."
Boston Academy
A dear old friend runs this opera company. I gave them some advice on balancing orchestra and singers in their hall in downtown Boston, the
Emerson Majestic Theatre
.
Dickenson University
Another small job: Dickenson College was happy with the acoustics of the Mathers Theatre. They asked me how to keep it that way through a renovation.
Eichelberger Performing Arts Center
This is an absolutely charming renovated theatre in Hanover, Pennsylvania. I worked with them on the acoustics of their pit.
Kultur-und Kongresszentrum Luzern
This is an absolutely over the top design by the architect Jean Nouvel. I built an early scale model of the hall.
La Salle Françoys-Bernier, Le Domaine Forget de Charlevoix
This is a wonderful dedicated recital hall for which I developed the acoustical program when I worked for Artec Consultants in New York.
Among the acoustical virtues of this hall are: absolute silent background, wrap-around balconies, height for reverberance, and totally adjustable reverberance. This space is a gem.
Lancaster Symphony Orchestra
I played in the first violin section of this orchestra for many years.
New Jersey Performing Arts Center
This is a really gorgeous complex, designed by Architect Barton Myers. I learned much of what I know about silent HVAC design working at Artec Consultants on this project.
Opera Delaware
I helped these folks out with the acoustics of their rehearsal room.
Delaware Opera performs in the wonderful and historic Grand Opera House in downtown Wilmington Delaware.
Pennsylvania Academy of Music
This superb and growing music school is where my son, Ethan, studies piano. His teacher, Steve Graff, transports me into a realm of bliss when he plays.
I was the acoustician for the Binns Rehearsal Hall at the Academy. As the Academy web page says, it was "acoustically
designed to simulate the effects of a large concert or recital hall."
They use this space for rehearsals, student recitals, and masterclasses.
Reading Museum
I helped them out with the acoustics of their stunning lobby, which is sometimes used for small concerts and parties.
Williamsport Community Arts Center
This is one of the very first projects that I worked on as an acoustical consultant for Assembly Places International in Philadelphia. With the new Williamsport Area High School, this will make two projects in Williamsport.

Acoustical Society Of America
This organization is a great source of information through the
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
The Architectural Institute of America (AIA)
My local chapter is
AIA Central PA.
I urge any architect in the area to join these energetic and creative people. Especially noteworthy is the yearly lecture series, which would be even better if it were more often.
Construction Specifications Institute
CSI is an organization which helps
architects, specifiers, engineers, owners,
facility managers, contract administrators and
suppliers communicate through the complicated process of design and construction.
INCE
The Institute of Noise Control Engineering is an excellent
source of information about noise control.
National Council of Acoustical Consultants
This is an organization of independent acoustical consultants. The work very closely with the Acoustical Society. Their emphasis is practical, whereas the Acoustical Society is more academic.
Syn-Aud-Con
The name stands for "synergetic audio concepts." This organization is a nexus of information on the theory and practice of sound system design. Taking over from the founders, Don and Carolyn Davis, Pat and Brenda Brown consult on sound system design, run a series of seminars all around the country, run
a lively list serve, and host a tremendously informative web site. I highly
recommend their sound system seminars to anyone who is interested in
this aspect of acoustics.
