During design, there were some concerns that the high volumes in this atrium would result in acoustical problems: a noisy "echoey" space. I sat down with the architect over drawings, and we worked out an approach that would coordinate acoustics and architecture.

The resulting atrium is open and filled with light, but without acoustical problems. Rather, the space is calm and quiet---appropriate for a hospital.
